THE TRADITION

Why These Three Prasads on Ram Navami?

Ram Navami falls in the month of Chaitra - the heat of early summer. The three prasads together reflect this season: panjiri provides nourishment and strength, panchamrit is offered as a cooling abhishek to the deity, and dhania sharbat - coriander water - is distributed to devotees to cool the body in the summer heat.

🪔

Panjiri

Offered as bhog to Bhagwan Ram and then distributed as prasad. Made from roasted wheat flour, ghee and dry fruits - it is nourishing, long-lasting and sacred.

🥛

Panchamrit

Used for the abhishek (sacred bathing) of Ram Lalla at midnight and midday - the birth hour. The five sacred nectars bathe the deity on his birthday.

🌿

Dhania Sharbat

Distributed to the thousands of devotees who fast all day on Ram Navami. Coriander water is cooling, digestive and traditionally considered auspicious on this day.

Panjiri - पंजीरी

The Sacred Roasted Offering

Significance

Panjiri has been offered to Bhagwan Ram on his birthday since ancient times. Wheat flour roasted in pure ghee with nuts and spices - it keeps well in summer heat, can be offered to thousands of devotees, and its warming spices like dry ginger and cardamom are considered auspicious for the deity's bhog. At the Ram Janmbhoomi temple, panjiri is prepared in large vessels (kadhais) and distributed freely to all pilgrims.

group Serves 8–10 · Prep: 10 min · Cook: 25 min

सामग्री · Ingredients

2 cupsWhole wheat flour (gehun atta)
½ cupPure desi ghee
¾ cupPowdered sugar (boora/mishri powder)
¼ cupAlmonds, roughly chopped
¼ cupCashews, roughly chopped
¼ cupMakhana (fox nuts), lightly crushed
2 tbspMelon seeds (magaz)
2 tbspCoconut, desiccated or fresh grated
1 tspGreen cardamom powder (elaichi)
½ tspDry ginger powder (saunth)
¼ tspBlack pepper powder
2 tbspRaisins (kishmish)

विधि · Method

01
Roast the flour: Heat ghee in a heavy kadhai on low flame. Add wheat flour and roast on low heat, stirring continuously, until it turns golden and releases a nutty aroma - about 15–18 minutes. Do not rush this step; slow roasting gives panjiri its characteristic deep flavour.
02
Add dry fruits: Add the makhana, almonds and cashews to the roasting flour in the last 3–4 minutes and roast together until the nuts are lightly golden.
03
Cool completely: Remove from heat and spread on a large plate to cool completely to room temperature. This is essential - adding sugar to hot mixture makes it clump.
04
Add remaining ingredients: Once fully cool, add powdered sugar, melon seeds, coconut, raisins, cardamom, dry ginger and black pepper. Mix thoroughly with clean dry hands.
05
Offer and distribute: Place in a clean vessel, offer to Bhagwan Ram with devotion, and distribute as prasad. Panjiri keeps well for 2–3 weeks in an airtight container.

Prasad Tip: Traditionally, panjiri is prepared only in pure ghee and no oil. Some households add edible gum (gond) roasted in ghee for added nutrition. The wheat flour must be roasted on absolutely low flame with patience - this is the most important step.

Panchamrit - पंचामृत

The Five Sacred Nectars for Ram Lalla's Abhishek

Significance

At the Ram Janmbhoomi temple, Panchamrit abhishek is performed at the exact birth time of Bhagwan Ram - midday (madhyahna) on Navami. The five sacred ingredients represent the five elements and the five divine nectars of creation. After the abhishek, the panchamrit is collected and distributed to devotees - drinking it is considered extremely auspicious and equivalent to drinking the deity's blessings directly.

विधि · Method for Abhishek

01
Prepare the panchamrit: In a clean copper or silver vessel (or glass), add all five ingredients together: milk, curd, ghee, honey and mishri. Mix gently with a clean silver spoon or tulsi stem.
02
Add tulsi and gangajal: Add 5–7 fresh tulsi leaves and a few drops of Gangajal (Ganga water). These transform the mixture into the complete sacred panchamrit.
03
Perform the abhishek: While chanting ॐ श्री रामाय नमः, pour the panchamrit slowly over the deity's image or Ram Lalla's idol, starting from the head. Use a small vessel or panchapatra.
04
Collect the prasad: The panchamrit that has bathed the deity is collected in a vessel below. This is now the most sacred prasad of Ram Navami - distribute it in small amounts to all devotees with a spoon.
05
Clean the deity: After the panchamrit, perform a gentle abhishek with plain water and then wipe the deity dry with a clean white cloth. Then dress in new clothes for the Navami celebration.

Sacred Note: Honey and milk should never be mixed at the same temperature in cooking - but for panchamrit abhishek, this combination is specifically prescribed and is the exception in sacred tradition. Always use fresh, pure ingredients - ideally cow's milk, cow's ghee and raw forest honey.

Dhania Sharbat - धनिया शरबत

Sacred Coriander Water - The Cooling Prasad of Fasting Devotees

Significance

Dhania (coriander seed) sharbat is the most beloved prasad distributed on Ram Navami - particularly at Ayodhya, where it is given to thousands of fasting pilgrims throughout the day. Coriander is cooling, digestive and considered sattvic - ideal for someone who has fasted since dawn. At the Ram Janmbhoomi temple, enormous pots of this sharbat are prepared and distributed continuously from early morning until sunset on Navami.

group Serves 6–8 · Prep: 10 min + 2 hrs soaking

सामग्री · Ingredients

3 tbspWhole coriander seeds (sabut dhania) - lightly roasted
4 cupsFresh cold water
3–4 tbspMishri (rock sugar) or sugar, to taste
½ tspBlack salt (kala namak) - optional
¼ tspRoasted cumin powder (bhuna jeera)
1 tbspFresh lemon juice - optional
5–6Fresh tulsi leaves
as neededIce or chilled water for serving

विधि · Method

01
Soak the coriander: Dry-roast the coriander seeds lightly in a pan until aromatic (1–2 minutes). Let cool, then soak in 4 cups of fresh water for at least 2 hours, or overnight for a deeper flavour.
02
Blend and strain: Transfer the soaked coriander with its water to a blender and blend for 30 seconds. Strain through a fine muslin cloth or strainer, pressing well to extract all the liquid. Discard the solids.
03
Season: To the coriander water, add mishri or sugar, black salt, roasted cumin powder and lemon juice. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
04
Add tulsi: Drop in fresh tulsi leaves and let them steep for 5 minutes. This not only adds flavour but transforms the sharbat into a devotional offering.
05
Chill and serve as prasad: Serve chilled in small clay cups (kullads) or disposable cups. For large temple distribution, prepare in bulk and keep in earthen pots to naturally stay cool.

Temple Scale Tip: At Ayodhya, dhania sharbat is made in huge quantities - often 200–300 litres - using earthen pots. For home distribution to neighbours and family, multiply this recipe. Adding a pinch of saunf (fennel) makes it even more digestive and cooling.
