Saryu Ghat, Ayodhya:
Where the Sacred River
Meets the Eternal Ram

The Saryu is not just a river — it is the living memory of Ayodhya. Along its ghats, Bhagwan Shri Ram was born, ruled, loved, and ultimately returned to the divine through Jalasamadhi. Every ripple carries a prayer. Every dawn here is a darshan.

Why the Saryu is Unlike Any Other River

In the Valmiki Ramayana and the Ramcharitmanas, the Saryu is not merely a geographic feature — she is a divine witness to the entire leela of Shri Ram, from birth to the final return to Vaikuntha.

Ram's Childhood Playground

Young Ram, Lakshman, Bharata, and Shatrughna played along these very banks. The Saryu saw their first steps, their childhood games, and their training under Maharishi Vishwamitra.

Gateway to Moksha

The scriptures declare the Saryu as Mokshadayini — the giver of liberation. A holy dip here, especially on auspicious days, is believed to wash away the accumulated karma of many lifetimes.

Site of Ram's Jalasamadhi

According to the Uttara Kanda, Bhagwan Ram concluded his earthly leela by walking into the Saryu with his entire kingdom — entering the divine waters and ascending to Vaikuntha. The spot is known as Guptar Ghat.

Five Ghats Every Pilgrim Should Know

The Saryu waterfront stretches for several kilometres, lined with ghats each carrying its own sacred history and ritual purpose.

Ram Ki Paidi (Naya Ghat)

Most Visited

The grand renovated ghat built in the 1980s, featuring wide stone steps descending directly to the Saryu. This is where the magnificent Saryu Aarti takes place every evening — rows of priests with large lamps, conch blowing, and thousands of devotees releasing diyas on the water. The atmosphere rivals Varanasi's Ganga Aarti in beauty and devotion.

Guptar Ghat

Most Sacred

Located slightly downstream, Guptar Ghat ("the hidden ghat") is the holiest spot on the Saryu — traditionally identified as the site where Bhagwan Ram took Jalasamadhi and returned to his divine abode. The Chakraharji Vishnu temple stands here, and the atmosphere is profoundly still. Many saints choose this ghat for meditation and last rites.

Swarg Dwar Ghat

Literally the "Gateway to Heaven," this is the primary cremation ghat of Ayodhya. It is considered supremely auspicious to have one's last rites performed here, as the Saryu is believed to grant liberation (moksha) to all who depart from her banks. A final dip for the dying is considered the ultimate grace.

Lakshman Ghat

Dedicated to Lakshman — the ideal younger brother and the very symbol of selfless service. This quieter ghat is associated with the Lakshmana Kila (Lakshman's fort). Pilgrims come here to pray for family bonds, siblings, and the virtue of seva (selfless service). The Saryu here flows with a particular gentleness.

Brahmakund Ghat

An ancient sacred kund (pool) fed by the Saryu, considered especially potent for ritual bathing on Ram Navami and Kartik Purnima. Local tradition holds that Lord Brahma himself bathed here, and the waters carry an exceptional sanctity for ancestral offerings (pitru tarpan).

At the banks of Saryu, Raghav (Ram) eternally abides.

Whether you come at the first blush of dawn for a silent holy dip, or in the golden evening to watch a thousand diyas set sail on the Saryu — you will leave with something you cannot name, but will carry forever. That is the gift of this river. That is the grace of Ram.
