According to the ancient Hindu calendar, Vivah Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Margashirsha month. The ceremony marks the moment when Ram proved his worthiness to become a husband of Mata Sita by lifting and stringing Shiva's divine bow, the Pinaka — the bow of the divine self — and uniting the sacred dharma of kingship with the grace of goddess Shakti.
In the theological vision of the Ramcharitmanas, the stories of Shri Ram and Sita were established from their transcendent love and the deepest principles of Dharmic union emphasising respect, equality and holistic devotion that made each person greater through their sacred partnership. Their relationship is a model of conscious, sacred marriage — the union of Dharma and Karuna, strength and surrender, action and devotion.
