THE CHANIYA CHOLI

Three Pieces, One Sacred Outfit

The traditional Gujarati Garba outfit for women consists of three elements - each with its own history and spiritual significance.

Chaniya

The Skirt

The chaniya is a long, flared, heavily embroidered skirt - traditionally in bright colours with heavy mirror-work (shisha embroidery), sequins and thread-work. When worn and spun in Garba, the chaniya fans out in a full circle - making the dancer herself look like a spinning mandala radiating from the centre. The width of the flare is considered auspicious - wider is grander.

Choli

The Blouse

The choli is a fitted, often backless or half-backed blouse that matches the chaniya in colour and embroidery. Traditional Gujarati cholis have elaborate lace-work, mirror embroidery and tassel details. The backless style was originally practical - Gujarat's Navratri nights can be warm and the hours of dancing required clothing that allowed free movement and cooling.

Dupatta / Odhani

The Veil

The dupatta (called odhani in Gujarati) is a light, diaphanous scarf in matching or complementary colour. Traditionally worn draped over the head or across the shoulder, the odhani represents modesty and offering - the covering of the head in the goddess's presence. Modern Garba often sees the odhani tucked into the chaniya or worn loosely.

🪞

The Mirror Embroidery - Shisha Work

The hundreds of tiny mirrors (shisha) sewn into the chaniya choli are not merely decorative. In Gujarati Shakti tradition, the mirror reflects the divine light of the goddess. When dancers move in Garba, the mirrors catch and scatter the lamplight in all directions - the Garba circle becomes a rotating constellation of tiny lights, each one a reflection of the divine flame at the centre.

Traditionally, the more mirrors on a chaniya choli, the more auspicious - because more light is reflected back to the goddess. The finest traditional chaniya cholis from Kutch and Saurashtra can have thousands of hand-stitched mirrors and take months to embroider.

JEWELLERY

Traditional Garba Jewellery

Traditional Garba jewellery is bold, layered and joyful - designed to catch the light and create sound with movement.

👑

Tikka / Maang Tikka

The forehead ornament - worn at the parting of the hair, hanging over the forehead. Represents the third eye of the goddess and marks the devotee's head as a sacred space during worship.

💧

Nath / Nose Ring

A traditional Gujarati nose ring - often large and decorative with pearls or flowers. Worn on the left nostril. In bridal and festive tradition, the nath is connected to the ear by a chain of flowers or gold.

⭕

Haar / Necklaces

Multiple layered necklaces are traditional - typically a short choker (kanthi), a medium-length piece and a long haar. Gold-plated, kundan, polki and meenakari work are all worn at Garba.

🔵

Bajuband / Armlet

The bajuband is an upper-arm ornament that moves beautifully in Garba. It is specifically a Gujarati bridal and festive tradition and is seen as a mark of the goddess - representing her strength.

🟡

Bangles / Kangan

Stacks of glass or metal bangles on both wrists - their sound as the hands clap and gesture in Garba creates the characteristic musical accent of the dance. Traditionally in the colour of the night.

🔔

Ghungroo / Ankle Bells

Small bells tied around the ankles - their sound marks every step of the Garba. The ghungroo has a long tradition in Indian classical dance as an instrument that makes the dancer's feet a percussion player.

MEN'S GARBA DRESS

Kediyu and Dhoti - The Men's Traditional Look

Kediyu

The Kediyu is a traditional Gujarati men's top - a short, flared tunic with wide sleeves, usually in bright colours with mirror and thread embroidery matching the women's chaniya choli. It flares at the waist and moves beautifully in Garba. The kediyu is exclusively Gujarati - not seen in this form elsewhere in India.

Dhoti or Churidar

Paired with the kediyu is either a traditional white dhoti (pleated and tucked) or a churidar (fitted trousers). The dhoti is the more traditional option - its white colour contrasts beautifully with the colourful kediyu and gives freedom of movement for the wide Garba steps.

Pagdi / Safa

A traditional Gujarati or Rajasthani turban (pagdi or safa) completes the men's look. The turban is tied in specific styles - the Bandhani or Leheria (tie-dye) turban is particularly associated with Navratri Garba in Gujarat. A peacock feather in the pagdi is considered auspicious, representing Krishna.

Men's Jewellery

Traditional men's Garba jewellery includes: a rudraksha or gold kanthi (necklace), a broad gold or silver kada (bracelet) on the right wrist, and ear studs. More elaborate festival looks include a maala (long beaded necklace) and silver rings.
