The Sacred Items for Your Mandap
The traditional Garba Mandap is built around eight sacred elements - each one carrying a specific spiritual meaning.
The Garbo
A clay pot (preferably unglazed, with small holes pierced in it) with a diya burning inside. The Garbo represents the womb of the universe - the creative power of the goddess. Place it on a bed of wheat or rice grains. This is the most essential element - without the Garbo there is no Garba Mandap.
Devi's Image or Murti
A picture or murti (idol) of Maa Amba, Maa Durga or whichever form of the goddess your family worships. Placed behind the Garbo, slightly elevated. This is the focal point of the puja. Decorate with fresh flowers - particularly marigold, hibiscus and red roses.
Wheat / Jau Seeds
The Garbo sits on a small mound of wheat seeds or jau (barley) - representing the earth's fertility and the goddess's role as the sustainer of all food and life. Some families use a small clay plate filled with wheat. By Navami, the seeds may have sprouted - this is considered highly auspicious.
Akhand Diya
An unbroken flame (akhand diya) kept burning for all nine days and nights - representing the continuous presence of the goddess. Traditionally filled with ghee and with a cotton wick. Some families make a vow (vrat) to keep this flame burning without interruption for the full nine nights.
Coconut
A whole coconut (with the coir still on, or without) placed on the Garbo or beside it. The coconut represents the human head being offered at the goddess's feet - the ego surrendered to the divine. It is cracked open on Ashtami or Navami as an offering.
Flowers and Garlands
Fresh flowers changed daily - marigold garlands around the Garbo, hibiscus flowers (Maa Durga's favourite) at the deity's feet, rose petals scattered. The daily changing of flowers is itself a ritual of renewal - each morning the mandap is refreshed for the goddess.
Kumkum and Roli
Kumkum (vermilion) and roli (red sindoor) are placed in a small vessel beside the deity for tilak application. A swastika drawn in kumkum on the floor or platform marks the mandap as a sacred space. Red is the goddess's colour - it represents power, auspiciousness and Shakti.
Gangajal
A small vessel of Gangajal (Ganga water) is kept at the mandap and used to sprinkle the space for purification each morning before puja. If Gangajal is not available, clean water with a tulsi leaf and a drop of milk can serve the same purpose.
Setting Up the Mandap - Day by Day
The Night Before Navratri - Preparation
Clean the chosen space thoroughly. The mandap should be in a clean, well-ventilated area - ideally the puja room or a dedicated corner. Lay a clean red or yellow cloth as the base. Prepare the Garbo by piercing small holes in a clay pot (if not pre-pierced). Soak the wheat or jau seeds in water overnight.
Pratipada (Day 1) - Ghatasthapana
The first day's ritual is Ghatasthapana - the installation of the sacred vessel. At the auspicious muhurta (ideally within the first third of the day), place the wheat or jau seeds on the cloth, fill the Garbo with water, place a diya inside it and light it. Install the goddess's image or murti. Apply kumkum tilak. The akhand diya is lit and should not be extinguished for nine days.
Daily Morning Ritual
Each morning: sprinkle Gangajal on the mandap. Replace the flowers and garlands with fresh ones. Refill the Garbo's diya. Apply fresh kumkum to the goddess's image. Offer fresh fruits or sweets as bhog. Perform the morning aarti - Jay Adhyashakti or Durga Chalisa. Ring the bell and bow.
Evening Garba Around the Mandap
In the evening, family and friends gather around the Garbo. Begin with the Jay Adhyashakti aarti together. Then circle the Garbo in the three-clap Garba step - even just three or five circles is a complete act of devotion. Sing along with recorded Garba songs or have a family member lead. The mandap is the centre; the family is the circle.
Ashtami - Kanjak Puja
On Ashtami, invite nine young girls for Kanjak puja (see the Halwa Puri Chana page for the complete vidhi). Perform the puja at the mandap. Offer the Kanjak thali at the mandap first - before serving to the girls. This links the human puja to the divine presence at the Garbo.
Navami - Closing the Mandap
On the ninth and final day, perform a special closing puja. Break the coconut as an offering. Crack open the Garbo - the wheat seeds inside may have sprouted, which is highly auspicious. Distribute the sprouted seeds to family members as prasad. Give thanks to the goddess and bid her farewell until next year. The akhand diya is then allowed to naturally extinguish.
Making the Mandap Beautiful
Marigold Torans
Hang marigold garland torans (door hangings) at the entrance to the mandap space. Marigolds are considered the most auspicious flower for goddess worship and their bright orange colour is traditionally associated with the divine feminine.
Rangoli
Draw a circular rangoli around the base of the Garbo - ideally using bright colours with a central lotus motif. The rangoli reinforces the circular nature of Garba and marks the sacred space. Use natural colours (sindoor, turmeric, rice flour) for traditional authenticity.
Diyas and Lights
Place multiple clay diyas around the mandap in addition to the main Garbo. String marigolds and add string lights (in warm white or golden) to create the magical evening atmosphere. Nine diyas - one for each night - arranged in a circle around the Garbo is a beautiful touch.
Red and Gold Colours
Use red and gold fabrics, dupattas and decorations for the mandap. Red is the goddess's primary colour - the colour of power and Shakti. Gold represents the divine light. A red velvet cloth under the Garbo and golden borders on the deity's frame complete the look.
