Who is Maa Katyayani?
She is named after the sage Katyayana, in whose ashram she was born - or according to some traditions, who performed intense penance to obtain her as his daughter. She is four-armed, golden-complexioned like blazing fire, lion-riding and ready for war.

"She whose hand blazes with the moon-bright sword, who rides the finest of lions - may the goddess Katyayani, slayer of demons, bestow auspiciousness upon me." Her dhyana shloka is chanted on Day 6 to invoke her warrior energy and the power to overcome inner and outer obstacles.

When All the Gods Became One
Mahishasura - the buffalo-demon - had terrorised the cosmos for aeons. He had conquered the heavens and driven the gods from their thrones. No single god could slay him. So all of them became one.
Mahishasura's Boon
The demon Mahishasura performed great penance and obtained a boon from Brahma: no man or god could slay him. He took this to mean he was immortal - not anticipating that the creator's boon said nothing about a woman. His arrogance became his doom.
The Gods Unite Their Radiance
The gods assembled in desperation. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, Agni, Vayu, Yama - each poured their divine energy outward. These streams of light fused into a single blinding radiance. From that cosmic fire, a woman emerged - beautiful, terrible, blazing - Maa Katyayani.
Armed by Every God
Each god gave her a weapon from their own arsenal: Shiva gave his trident, Vishnu his Sudarshana chakra, Indra his thunderbolt, Varuna his conch, Agni his flames, Vayu his bow - gift after gift, until she stood fully armed with the power of the entire universe.
The Slaying of Mahishasura
The battle was fierce and legendary - described in the Devi Mahatmya across multiple chapters. Mahishasura changed forms repeatedly trying to escape. Finally, with Shiva's sword and her own divine fury, Maa Katyayani severed his head and liberated the cosmos. The gods rained flowers from the heavens.
The Goddess Worshipped for Love
There is a second, deeply beloved story of Katyayani - this time not from the battlefield of Lanka or the heavens, but from the banks of the Yamuna in Vrindavan.
According to the Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 10), the Gopis - the young cowherd girls of Vrindavan - observed a month-long vrata in the month of Margashirsha, bathing in the Yamuna at dawn and worshipping Maa Katyayani's image made of sand on the riverbank.
Their prayer was singular and pure: "O Goddess Katyayani - Mahayogini, Maheshwari - make Nanda's son Krishna our husband."
Shri Krishna himself acknowledged this vrata, and eventually appeared to the Gopis in the divine Raas Leela. The Katyayani Vrat is still observed by unmarried girls praying for a good husband, connecting the fierce warrior goddess to the most tender form of devotion.
कात्यायनि महामाये महायोगिन्यधीश्वरि।
नन्दगोपसुतं देवि पतिं मे कुरु ते नमः॥
"O Katyayani, great Maya, great Yogini, Maheshwari - O Devi, make the son of Nanda Gopa my husband. I bow to you."
- Bhagavata Purana 10.22.4
ॐ कात्यायन्यै नमः
Om Kātyāyanyai Namah
Chant 108 times on Day 6. Her worship destroys enemies, removes obstacles to marriage, and activates the Ajna chakra. Unmarried devotees praying for a righteous partner receive her special blessing today.
How to Worship Maa Katyayani on Day 6
Red is the colour of power, courage and divine fire - all of which Katyayani embodies. Wearing red on Day 6 honours her warrior nature and invites her strength and decisiveness into your life.
Honey (madhu) is the traditional offering for Maa Katyayani. Some traditions also offer paan (betel leaf). Offering honey is said to bring sweetness into relationships, remove obstacles in marriage and bless the devotee with prosperity.
Following the Gopis' example, unmarried girls traditionally observe a fast on Day 6 and pray to Maa Katyayani for a devoted, righteous husband. The prayer should be made with a pure heart and complete surrender - as the Gopis surrendered to the goddess.
With a rudraksha mala, chant ॐ कात्यायन्यै नमः 108 times. This activates the Ajna chakra - the third eye - and is said to destroy confusion, sharpen intuition and grant the devotee the courage to face any challenge.
Day 6 aligns with the Madhyama Charitra of Devi Mahatmya - the central narrative of the goddess's great battle with Mahishasura. These chapters carry Katyayani's energy most directly and are ideal for reading or listening today.
What Katyayani Teaches Us
Unity Creates New Power
No single god could defeat Mahishasura. But when they combined their energies - surrendering their individual power for a collective purpose - something entirely new and greater was born. This is the teaching of cooperation over isolation.
Arrogance Has a Loophole
Mahishasura's boon protected him from all men - yet he was destroyed by a woman. His own arrogance and limited thinking created his downfall. Katyayani teaches us that no ego is truly invincible, and that what we dismiss is often what undoes us.
The Warrior Goddess Hears Love
The Gopis didn't approach the goddess with a weapon or a battle prayer. They came with love - wanting Krishna. And the same goddess who slew Mahishasura heard their tender prayer. The divine does not require fierceness to be approached; it only requires sincerity.
