Who is Maa Shailputri?
"Shaila" means mountain, "Putri" means daughter. She is the divine shakti who took birth as the daughter of Himavan - the personification of the Himalayas - and is worshipped as the very first form of Nav Durga.

Vande vāñchita-lābhāya candrārdha-kṛta-śekharām, Vṛṣārūḍhāṃ śūladharāṃ Śailaputrīṃ yaśasvinīm.
"I bow to Maa Shailputri - she who grants all desired boons, who bears a crescent moon on her crown, who rides a bull, who holds the trident, and who is forever glorious." This is the dhyana shloka chanted at the beginning of her worship on Navratri Day 1.

The Three Births of the Goddess
To understand Shailputri is to follow the Devi through her previous divine births - each a chapter in the eternal love between Shakti and Shiva.
Sati - Daughter of Daksha
In her first birth, the goddess was born as Sati, daughter of Prajapati Daksha. She fell in love with Shiva and married him against her father's wishes. When Daksha organised a grand yagna and deliberately insulted Shiva by not inviting him, Sati attended - and unable to bear her husband's humiliation, she immolated herself in the sacred fire. This act of ultimate devotion and protest shook the cosmos itself.
Shailputri - Daughter of Himavan
In her second birth, the same divine Shakti was reborn as Shailputri - daughter of Himavan, the king of the Himalayas, and his queen Mena. Born amidst the eternal snows and sacred peaks, she retained the memory of her previous devotion to Shiva. This is the form we worship on Navratri Day 1 - the goddess in her mountain-born purity, before her great tapasya begins.
Parvati - The Perfect Half of Shiva
As Shailputri grew, she remembered her vow to be Shiva's wife. She performed intense tapasya - becoming Brahmacharini (Navratri Day 2) - and won Shiva's acceptance. After their divine marriage, she became Parvati, the beloved consort of Mahadeva, and eventually took on her fierce warrior forms as Durga and Kali. The Nav Durga series traces this entire journey across nine forms.
How to Worship Maa Shailputri on Day 1
Navratri Day 1 begins with Ghatasthapana - the ceremonial installation of the kalash - followed by the worship of Maa Shailputri.
Fill a copper or earthen pot with holy water, place mango leaves and a coconut on it, and install it on a bed of soil with sown seeds. This kalash represents the goddess herself and the fertile energy of the nine days ahead. It must be placed in the auspicious muhurta on the first morning.
Each day of Navratri has a dedicated colour for the goddess and for devotees. On Day 1, wear royal blue or grey - colours that honour Maa Shailputri's connection to the mountains, sky, and the strength she embodies.
Maa Shailputri is especially pleased by white flowers - jasmine, white champa or white lotus. Her bhog (offering) on Day 1 traditionally includes pure cow's ghee and milk. Offering ghee on Day 1 is said to bless the devotee with good health and freedom from disease.
Using a rudraksha mala, chant her beej mantra ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे or simply ॐ शैलपुत्र्यै नमः 108 times. This activates the Muladhara chakra and grounds the spiritual energy for the entire Navratri.
Each day of Navratri corresponds to a section of the Durga Saptashati (700 verses of Devi Mahatmya from the Markandeya Purana). Day 1 aligns with the first chapter - the story of Madhu and Kaitabha. Listening to or reading this with devotion is considered highly meritorious.
Om Shailputryai Namah
Chant this mantra 108 times with a pure heart and rudraksha mala on the first morning of Navratri. Offer a white flower with each round.
Why Shailputri is Worshipped First
The order of the Nav Durga forms is not accidental - it is a complete spiritual journey. Shailputri comes first for profound reasons.
Foundation of All Nine
The Muladhara chakra is the root - without its activation, the other eight chakras cannot be energised. Similarly, worship of Shailputri grounds the devotee before the ascent through the other eight forms.
The Original Devotion
Shailputri represents the goddess before her trials - innocent, pure, full of potential. She is the beginning of the Shakti story. To begin Navratri with her is to begin at the source.
Shakti in Her Purest Form
She has not yet fought demons, not yet performed tapasya, not yet become fierce. She is the complete, serene, mountain-born goddess - all power at rest. This is the most sattvic form of the Devi.
