Who is Maa Kushmanda?
"Ku" means little, "Ushma" means energy/warmth, "Anda" means cosmic egg. She is the one who created the universe - the little warm egg of creation - from nothing but her own divine smile and inner light.

"She who holds in her lotus hands a pot filled with the nectar of the gods and one filled with blood - may Maa Kushmanda bestow auspiciousness upon me." This shloka encapsulates her role as sustainer of both creation and its cycles of life and dissolution.

The Smile That Lit the Universe
Before there was anything - no sun, no stars, no earth, no time - there was darkness and void. And within that void was the goddess.
Before Creation - Endless Void
In the beginning there was nothing - no light, no matter, no time. The scriptures describe this as the state before even Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva existed in their current forms. All that existed was the Adi Shakti - the primordial energy of the universe - waiting within the darkness.
The Divine Smile
The goddess smiled - a single, spontaneous expression of divine joy from within the infinite darkness. That smile radiated light. That light became the first energy. And from that energy, the brahmanda - the cosmic egg - was born. The universe had begun.
She Entered the Sun
After setting creation in motion, Maa Kushmanda took up residence within the solar disc - the most powerful source of energy in our solar system. She sustains the sun's radiance, and through the sun, sustains all life on earth. She is the life-force behind every sunrise.
The Most Ancient Form
Of all Nav Durga, Kushmanda is the most cosmically primordial. The other forms - Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta - are manifestations within creation. But Kushmanda preceded creation. She is Adi Shakti at her most original, most vast, most awe-inspiring.
Om Kūṣmāṇḍāyai Namah
Chant 108 times on Day 4. Her worship dispels disease, increases vitality and fills the devotee with creative energy. Offer yellow flowers and kumhde ka prasad (pumpkin-based offering) for her special blessing.
How to Worship Maa Kushmanda on Day 4
Yellow is the colour of the sun - Maa Kushmanda's abode. Wearing bright yellow or orange on Day 4 is said to attract her solar blessings of health, vitality and positive energy.
The traditional bhog for Maa Kushmanda is malpua - sweet pancakes. Some traditions also offer pumpkin (kumhda) in her worship, as her name itself contains a reference to it. Offering with devotion is said to bring long life and good health.
On Day 4, begin her puja facing east - the direction of the rising sun. Since she lives in the solar disc, worshipping her as the sun rises is the most aligned and powerful time for her invocation.
Use a rudraksha mala and chant ॐ कूष्माण्डायै नमः 108 times. This activates the Anahata (heart) chakra and is said to fill the devotee with creative vitality and freedom from illness.
Day 4 aligns with chapter 9 of Devi Mahatmya - the goddess's final praise hymns. Meditating on Kushmanda's cosmic form while listening to these praises connects the devotee to the primordial source of all shakti.
What Kushmanda Teaches Us
Joy is Creative Power
She created the universe not from effort or struggle, but from a smile - a spontaneous act of joy. The teaching: genuine joy and delight are themselves creative forces. When you act from the deepest happiness within you, you create something real.
Be a Source, Not a Receiver
She lives in the sun and radiates outward endlessly. Her teaching invites us to become sources of light - of warmth, energy and sustenance - for those around us, rather than constantly seeking to receive.
Everything Began with Shakti
Before any god, any law, any element - there was Shakti. Kushmanda teaches the primacy of divine feminine energy in all of creation. The universe is not maintained by force alone; it is born from and sustained by love.
